“Common sense is no longer common.” This phrase has motivated Nyra Simon to write Basic Instructions Before Eating Earth, in the hope that, with it, readers can change the way they feel about nature and the provisions God has set before them.

The author starts by explaining some basic rules that the readers have to be conversant with before applying the information being shared. Backing each point with quotations from Bible verses, the author then invites readers to take a critical look at some of the plants that they can use effectively in their everyday lives. After that, Simon discusses how society has lost touch with the simple things, the effects of this, and much more.

The first thing I like about this book is that it is concise. The author doesn’t beat about the bush and goes straight to the point right from the beginning, driving her points home. I also found the information that was shared by the writer thought-provoking and engaging. A number of things were discussed, but I most connected with the part of the text that talked about genetically modified foods as well as the relationship between what we eat and our ability to heal ourselves. The author suggests that if we don’t eat that which has the power to grow itself, then we have high chances of not being able to heal ourselves. I found it very enlightening, and I think I agree with the author’s thoughts. I was also pleased to learn about different spices and their uses.
